Well, I bought this receiver since I needed a 3d capable receiver. I had a yamaha 663. Believe it or not, this little receiver beat it in terms of volume quality. Yeah this baby has less watts, but the sound is crisp. I did have to run the volume at around 50% of the maximum, but don’t be fooled by that. Barely turning it up to 60-65% will come close to filling a whole side of your house. The on-screen menu is amazing. I love being able to see the menu on the screen, but still being able to see what you are watching in the background. This little guy does not have the auto-configure mic like the 508 and up, but the speaker settings are easy. Increase the db on the speakers if you want a little more power going to your sides, center, or rear speakers. Then just tell the receiver if you have small/large speakers for each type and about how many feet they are away. This receiver does work with the ps3 and samsung 6900 3d blu-ray player. However, I had to send it out pcm. PCM is where the dvd/blu-ray player translates the audio. Bitstream is where this receiver converts the audio. It is minor, you get the same audio, but you don’t get that nice little logo saying you are playing dts m.a. Which kind of stinks since I want to know my receiver is really playing hd audio rather than just saying pcm all the time. My ps3 is the fat launch model and my 6900 does have the latest firmware. Bitstream does not work at all with the 6900. I have a 46″ 8000 series 3d tv. Yeah this receiver supports arc. ARC is where you have all your devices go to your tv and then one hdmi cable will send all the audio to the receiver so you never have to even use the remote. You can adjust the volume and even power it up from the tv remote. However, in my case the audio did not transfer correctly. It was muffled and I lost the center channel which most movies use for dialog. I just had everything go through the receiver. It is minor. This receiver easily plays 3d ps3 games, 3d movies (not blu-ray as of this posting, but downloaded ps3 3d videos like their sizzle video), and 3d blu-rays on my samsung 6900.
My lemon receiver.
The following may not happen to you. I would lose video about every third boot. I am using expensive 1.4 cables and yes I tried other cables and verified connections. I would turn it on and no video whatsoever. Come to find out this receiver is sensitive to static. I would have to physically unplug and reconnect the receiver to get video again. Seemed to happen about every 1/3 time I would turn on the receiver. Yes, the sources on tv and receiver were correct. I even tried a factory reset which a forum member recommended. You do this by turning on the receiver then holding down tv/vcr and hitting power. For a split second before it turns off it will say clear. I probably have a bad receiver. When I setup the tv remote control options it makes the problem happen every other boot or more. I am sending it back and buying a 508 which has a few extra features like the room mic to setup the receiver with a few buttons, a tiny bit more watts per channel, an extra hdmi port for my 360, and I read someone made the leap to the 508 after having the same 308 issue as myself and fixed it. Another poster said a better hdmi cable, but since this problem only appears for me when I turn it on rather than changing sources I don’t think it is the cable. If it was the cable, it would probably go crazy on a 3d movie since during that playback you are sending two 1080p pictures and full hd audio which is an insane amount of data over a cable. I don’t think this is common at all since on the audio forum many people were praising the amazing sound quality and how much value you get from an in-expensive receiver. Very few negatives expect a perfectionist saying a 00 receiver is better. For your typical living room or bed room this is perfect if you don’t have my issues. I am still using a launch 360, but the next time it red rings on me I am buying a slim and will connect it via hdmi. I am currently using vga which offers an amazing picture that beats component video hands down. Please don’t judge my lemon as being common. It probably is not a common issue, but if you start having this video issue, make sure to let Amazon know since it won’t go away no matter where you move the receiver or even if you plug the receiver into the wall and bypass a surge protector.
